What is one Health?

Image

One Health is an integrated approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. It emphasizes that the health of people is closely linked to the health of animals and the environment and that challenges such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonotic diseases, food safety, and environmental contamination require collaborative, multi-sectoral efforts. By bringing together experts from various fields—including medicine, veterinary science, environmental science, public health, and policy—One Health aims to develop comprehensive strategies to prevent, detect, and respond to health threats that cross the boundaries of these sectors. This holistic approach is vital for addressing complex global health challenges and promoting sustainable health for all.

Role of One Health in containing AMR

The One Health approach is crucial in containing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) because it addresses the problem at its roots by targeting all possible sources of resistance development and spread. AMR is not just a human health issue; it also affects animals and the environment. Antibiotics used in animal agriculture and aquaculture can lead to resistant bacteria that transfer to humans through the food chain, direct contact, or environmental pathways like water and soil contamination. Similarly, the misuse of antimicrobials in healthcare and veterinary settings can amplify resistance. A One Health approach promotes collaboration across human health, veterinary, and environmental sectors to ensure responsible antibiotic use, strengthen surveillance systems, improve infection prevention and control, and develop alternatives to antibiotics, such as vaccines. This integrated strategy is essential to creating sustainable solutions that limit the emergence and spread of AMR globally, protecting both current and future generations.
