Be Part of World AMR Awareness Week!
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) stands as one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. In 2019 alone, bacterial AMR was directly responsible for approximately 1.27 million deaths worldwide and contributed to nearly 4.95 million deaths. Projections are even more alarming; if unaddressed, AMR could lead to over 39 million deaths in the next 25 years, equating to more than three deaths every minute. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear a disproportionate burden of this crisis. Factors such as limited access to quality healthcare, unregulated antibiotic use, and inadequate sanitation contribute to the rapid spread of resistant infections in these regions. Notably, one in five AMR-related deaths occurs in children under five, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions
Every year, from November 18 to 24, the world unites to raise awareness about Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW). Since 2020, OAZIS Health has actively participated in this global initiative, spearheading educational campaigns, outreach programs, and interactive activities to engage diverse stakeholders in Rwanda.
AMR poses a significant threat to global health, food security, and economic development. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and agriculture have accelerated the emergence of drug-resistant infections, making it harder to treat common illnesses. This is where YOU can make a difference, here is how we make an impact…
University Students engagement
We believe that knowledge is power. Through interactive workshops and competitions in universities, we equip young minds with an in-depth understanding of AMR, its causes, and preventive measures. By engaging future healthcare professionals, veterinarians, pharmacists, and researchers, we build a network of AMR champions who will lead the fight in their respective fields.
Patient Education Outreaches
Community involvement is key to effective change. We organize outreach programs to educate patients and local communities about responsible antibiotic use, infection prevention, and the dangers of self-medication. Through these engagements, we empower individuals with the knowledge to take informed healthcare decisions.
Media Awareness: Radio and TV Campaigns
Mainstream media plays a crucial role in spreading awareness. By partnering with radio and television stations, we broadcast expert discussions, testimonies, and AMR-related messages to reach a wider audience. This ensures that even those in remote areas gain access to vital information on antimicrobial resistance.
Online Advocacy and Campaigns
In today’s digital world, social media serves as an effective tool for education and advocacy. We conduct online campaigns that encourage individuals to share messages about AMR, antibiotic stewardship, and responsible antimicrobial use. Our interactive approach engages diverse audiences and amplifies the reach of our awareness efforts. Using twibbons, individuals share widely on social media their personalised messages calling for an action to preserve antimicrobials. We engage the general community, proffessionals and policy makers as well.
Children engagement
Children are the future, and early education is crucial in shaping responsible behaviors. To make learning about AMR both fun and impactful, we distribute specially designed AMR-themed coloring books that simplify complex concepts into engaging, age-appropriate activities. These interactive books not only nurture creativity but also instill fundamental lessons on hygiene, infection prevention, and the responsible use of medicine. Through vibrant illustrations and relatable storytelling, children absorb these critical health messages in an enjoyable way, fostering a lifelong awareness of the importance of antimicrobial stewardship.
The fight against AMR requires a multi-sectoral approach, involving governments, health professionals, academia, the private sector, civil society, and individuals like YOU. The time to act is NOW! Let’s work together to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations. If you are interested in partnering, collaborating, or supporting our AMR awareness efforts, reach out to us.
