If your mammogram shows something unusual, your doctor might order more imaging tests. Sometimes, additional testing like a breast biopsy (where a small tissue sample is taken for examination) is needed to investigate further.
Other approaches may have a role in screening including imaging tests other than mammography, these include:
BREAST ULTRASOUND: A procedure in which high-energy sound waves (ultrasound) bounce off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues called a sonogram.
PICTURE: Breast ultrasound
BREAST MRI: A procedure that uses a magnet, radio waves, and a computer to make a series of detailed pictures of both breasts.
BLOOD CHEMISTRY STUDIES: A procedure where a blood sample is tested to measure the levels of certain substances released by organs. An abnormal amount (higher or lower than normal) can indicate disease.
